Book Review by Jack Falt

Dunning, Donna, Temperament and Learning, 4 booklets: SP - Animal Is the Fox, SJ - Animal Is the Beaver, NF - Animal Is the Dolphin, and NT - Animal Is the Owl, Red Deer, AB: Unlimited Learning Publications, 1999, 20 pp.

This series of four little booklets are taken from Donna Dunning’s Learning Your Way. To use them individuals need to know their personality type, as it is not enough for them to just know their temperament. There is one booklet for each temperament so they could be distributed out in class for less than the cost of her full book. The temperaments are identified by their Keirsey/ Berens designation.

Each booklet has a checklist for each of the two preference letters of the temperament, listing a number of points on what that temperament needs to be able to learn. Then there is a list of learning preferences by the temperament as a whole. There is a point form set of tips to follow for a leaning plan.

Next it looks at each of the four types within the temperament, giving the learning characteristics of the type and a list of ways the other two preferences letters of the type learn. The booklet could have been further condensed by not repeating the same lists that types have in common.

The booklet concludes with a summary of how the temperament learns and tips on how to make a summary of one’s own leaning preferences. There is space for individuals to write down their own learning preferences in answer to four questions.

Assuming individuals knew their own type, they would still need guidance to be able to make use of the booklets. These could be used as class materials or a counsellor could use them with individual students. They would make a good handout.
