QUIET EVENING

blue ceiling
blue armchairs
cool, cool evening
chill in the air
cherubim room
in bloom
blue gloom
a frosty stare

soft murmur
mantra sigh
long to learn the
ponderous Why
bone dice are spun
cat's tongue
has stung
with thorns of ice

strewn papers
straw-hewn walls
all at stake or
nothing at all
sit in the still
whisp-o'-will
storm, spill
a silent squall

white whisper
white witch dance
I kiss her
mystic chance
drift quiet dreams
mist in reams
to glean
her chilling glance

snowflakes sleep:
deep evening
pearls of witch weep
into meaning
slowly distil
in pastel,
crystal
thoughts concealing
depth of feeling
painted on a blue ceiling.
