Professional Handout Review by Jack Falt
Macdaid, Gerald P.; Fields, Margaret U.; &
Reid, Jean B., Building a Living Type Table, Gainesville,
FL: Centre for Applications of Psychological Type, 8 pp (dividing a large
group up into the 16 types with discussion ideas, including the four quadrants,
combinations and the 4 columns)
Probably if you took the training to administer the
MBTI® instrument, you have participated in the Living Type Table. It’s
a neat exercise to use with a large group who are experiencing Jung/Myers
theory for the first time. This professional handout describes that process
in detail. It is useful to combine this with the Understanding the Type
Table handout.
Besides placing people in the 16 boxes of Type,
this exercise goes beyond that by reenforcing the concepts of the 8 Preferences.
It also helps people to see the usefulness of the various differences in
the different preference combinations: How the four quadrants relate to
leadership, learning and work styles; the four columns relate to
careers; and the combinations of TJ, TP, FJ and FP and their relation to
the world of work.
This 30 to 45 minute exercise is well worth the
time to liven up an Jung/Myers theory introduction. This material is a
leader’s guide. Understanding the Type Table would make an excellent handout
to go with it.
