Booklet Review by Jack Falt

Barger, Nancy J., & Linda K. Kirby, Introduction to Type and Change, Palo Alto, CA: Cpp. Inc., 2004, ISBN - none, 44 pp, resources.

This booklet is an update of the authors’ previous 1997 version. They have revised the format and updated the concepts. They briefly outline the theory of Jung/Myers. I like their simple line diagrams showing the differences between the four behaviour dichotomies. There is a checklist to use to access the impact change will have on each of the preferences, and another to attend to the needs of each preference.

Various aspects of change are described: the effects of imposed change: dealing with losses: change fatigue, cynicism, and stress; leadership through change; and dealing with resistance. There are one-page type descriptions looking at: needs during a time of change, reactions when needs not met, when dealing with losses, during the transition period, and during the start-up phase.

This is an excellent resource to have as a handout when working with clients who are facing major changes in their lives. You might also be asked to help a company go through the change process to make it as painless as possible. The same authors have written a book on change that is well worth reading: Barger, Nancy J. & Kirby, Linda K., The Challenge of Change in Organizations: Helping Employees Thrive in the New Frontier (1995). In addition they have co-authored a resource guide (a workshop in a box) called MBTI® Type and Change.
